Volunteering opportunity in North London

On Tuesday 10th March, a group of university students from UCL joined CCNA for a practical day by the Canal. They did not just watch from the towpath. Instead, they got involved from the start.

The day combined Canal heritage, outdoor learning, and teamwork. Students learned more about the history of the Canal, saw how locks operate, and helped plant the CaTR gardens by the gas towers. Afterwards, the group boarded Tarporley for a trip from St Pancras Basin to the London Canal Museum, where Tarporley regularly moors.

The photos say a lot. You can see the group gathered by the lock, ready in lifejackets and listening closely. You can also see Tarporley setting off, with students onboard and the basin opening out behind them. As a result, the day feels active, useful, and genuinely memorable.

Volunteering Opportunity in North London - The Volunteers

A volunteering opportunity in North London with real variety:

This kind of session shows why CCNA stands out and how we support on a practical, accessible level. Tarporley is a volunteer-run community boat and its volunteers keep the organisation moving. The charity offers practical, public-facing, and administrative roles. These range from crew work and lock operation to maintenance, marketing, bookings, and community support. Longer-term volunteers can also train towards skipper and crew qualifications.

Not everyone wants the same kind of role. Some people want to be on the boat. Others prefer behind-the-scenes support. Either way, CCNA gives people a clear volunteering opportunity in North London that builds confidence, knowledge, and local connection.

Tarporley also serves a wider community purpose. The charity runs cruises for community groups and makes the boat available for organised trips. It carries groups of up to 12 passengers, and the income from bookings helps support its charitable work.

Why this work matters on London’s waterways:

This trip was completed in collaboration with The Canal & River Trust. The Canal & River Trust cares for 2,000 miles of canals and rivers across England and Wales. In London and the South East, it encourages people to volunteer, get outdoors, and help improve local waterways and wellbeing spaces.

That makes local volunteering even more valuable. Regent’s Canal is not just a scenic backdrop. It is a working historic waterway that opened in 1820 and still shapes how people experience London today. It links major parts of the city and offers a different view of places like King’s Cross and Camden.

So, if this visit sparked your interest, keep watching CCNA’s social channels. Better still, get in touch and ask how to join in. For anyone seeking a volunteering opportunity in North London, this is one that gets you learning, helping, and out on the water.
